What to do in the first week after a car accident

· 1 min read

The days after a crash are a blur. A few small steps now make a big difference later, both for your recovery and for any claim.

Five steps for the first week

  1. See a doctor. Even if you feel fine. Some injuries show up days later, and a record from the first week matters.
  2. Photograph everything. The cars, the road, your injuries and any bruises as they change.
  3. Get the police report number. You will need it for every insurance call.
  4. Keep a simple diary. Pain, missed work and what you couldn't do that day.
  5. Keep every receipt. Prescriptions, taxi rides and parking at appointments all count.

Talking to the other driver's insurer

You don't have to give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurance company. Be polite, give the basic facts, and say you will follow up in writing.

A quick early offer is rarely the best offer. Know what your injury will cost before you sign anything.
