What to do in the first ten minutes after a pipe bursts
· 1 min read
A burst pipe can put hundreds of gallons on the floor in an hour. These steps keep the damage small while help is on the way.
Shut off the water
Find your main shut off valve. It is often where the water line enters the house, near the meter, or in the basement or garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
Turn off power near the water
If water is close to outlets or appliances, switch off that circuit at the panel. Don't stand in water to do it.
Drain the lines
Open the lowest taps in the house to let the water left in the pipes run out.
Save what you can
- Move rugs, boxes and electronics to a dry spot.
- Take photos of the damage for your insurance.
- Mop and run fans to start the drying.
Call a plumber
A burst pipe needs a proper repair, not tape. Most can be fixed the same day.
