About

Hello, I'm June

I'm June, an abstract painter working out of a converted sail loft on the Portland waterfront.

Artist statement

I paint what a place feels like after you have stopped looking at it. The harbor in fog, a field in August, a hallway at the end of the day.

Most paintings start outside, with a pencil sketch and a few notes about color. Back in the studio I build them up in thin layers of oil and cold wax, then scrape and sand back into them until something true shows up.

I want the paintings to be quiet enough to live with and strange enough to keep looking at.

Bio

I grew up on the coast of Maine, studied printmaking in Boston and spent ten years as a scenic painter for theaters before going full time in my own studio in 2021.

When I am not painting I am usually walking the Eastern Promenade with a sketchbook, or teaching a small cold wax workshop in the studio.
