Questions
Things people ask me.
What is a UTM link?
It is your normal link with a few labels added to the end, like utm_source=facebook. Google Analytics reads those labels, so you can see exactly which post, email or flyer sent each visitor.
Which UTM fields do I need?
Source, medium and campaign. Source is where the link lives, medium is the type of channel and campaign is the promotion. Term and content are optional and handy for ads or testing two buttons.
Should I use UTM links on my own website?
No. Only use them on links that point to your site from somewhere else. Adding them to your own menu or buttons resets the visit in Analytics and muddles your reports.
Why does capitalization matter?
Google Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources. Keep everything lowercase with dashes, which is what tidy values does for you.
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page unless you hit save.
