CLAUDE.md is a plain text file at the top of your repo. Claude reads it at the start of every session, before it does anything. It holds what Claude cannot guess: what the project is, where things live, how you like things done, and the rules it must follow.

Without it, every session starts from zero, and you repeat yourself. With it, the second month goes faster than the first, because every correction you made once is already written down.
